Leaving All to Follow

Leaving All to Follow

Peter said, “Look, we have left everything and followed you.” Luke 18:28 NCV

Luke 18 records a series of events and conversations that gave significant directions about what it means to follow Jesus. First, Jesus tells a story of a woman who had a great need but the judge didn’t answer her. Jesus said she kept persevering and going to the judge, and eventually he answered her. Jesus taught that His followers must always pray and never lose hope.

Then he told a story about a humble, repentant tax collector and a proud, condescending Pharisee to say that those who follow Him will be humble. People brought their children to Jesus for Him to touch them and bless them. The disciples proved they weren’t quite getting the idea yet – they attempted to shoo the children and parents away. They felt the children detracted from the “important” business. Jesus used the opportunity to not only bless the children, but to teach that anyone who was not willing to accept the kingdom of God like a little child cannot enter it.

Then a young man who was a teacher/Jewish leader asked, “Good Teacher, what must I do to have life forever?”

Jesus asked him, “Why do you call me ‘good’? There’s no one good but God.” He let that settle in so the man would consider who he really thought Jesus was. Then He ran through a quick bullet list of the Ten Commandments.

The man quickly responded, “I have kept all of those since I was a child.” He was truthful – that’s how he was working to please God. He had done it well enough to be a Jewish leader. But he still didn’t have confidence in his standing with God.

Jesus’ response was disappointing and challenging. “One more thing – sell everything you have, give it to the poor, and come follow me.” The rich young man was crestfallen. He chose to walk away instead of following. Listeners agreed. The request was too hard.

Peter, as usual, was the first disciple to speak up. He said, “Look, we have left everything and followed You!” It was true as far as they knew at the moment. They had left their careers and their routines, and they were following the Rabbi as His disciples. Before long they were going to discover that following is not a one-time act or decision. It is ongoing, daily, and continually active. But the rewards are great. Jesus assured them, “I tell you the truth, all those who have left houses, wives, brothers, parents, or children for the kingdom of God will get much more in this life. And in the age that is coming, they will have life forever.” Luke 18:29-30 NCV

  • Following Jesus requires leaving everything that takes priority over Him. It is a decision made continually as we follow throughout life. Help me, Jesus.
