Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known. Jeremiah 33:3 ESV
When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. John 16:13 NLT
We’ve all witnessed it. Many of us have been part of the scenario. A baby is born, and before long the parents are hanging on every sound the little one makes, anticipating first words and eventual conversations. There’s generally a friendly competition on whose name the children will speak first. But the desire is plain. That parent has an overwhelming desire to converse intimately with their child.
Shouldn’t be too surprising. As they say, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. God, our Father, is the perfect Father, and His desire is always to communicate with us. As a good Father, He longs to have direct, intimate conversations with you, His dearly loved child. He wants it to be daily and natural, all day long. God loves to speak. He isn’t silent. He isn’t distant. He longs for you to live with the knowledge of His love and how to follow His plan and will. He wants to intimately communicate with us so much that He has given us the Spirit of Truth, the Holy Spirit, who gives us access to the heart of God.
Think about that for a minute. God loves you so much that He wants to have transforming conversations with you. He wants to know you and for you to know Him. Like any wonderful parent, His desire is to help you know Him. He already knows you intimately. He yearns to help you with your identity issues, your decisions, your relationships, your work, your finances, everything. The Almighty God, who is also your Father, wants to talk with you about your life – to help you with every need.
Here's the thing. To hear Him, you have to be listening. Like a child with a parent, the parent may speak words of worth, information, affirmation – truly words of life – but the child must decide to listen in order to hear and benefit. Decide to do that. Your Father loves you and He needs your ear.
- Take a minute to quiet your heart and settle your soul. Expect God through His Holy Spirit to speak to you. Tell God how you feel. Express your love and ask Him anything you need to know. Maybe you just want to hear that He loves you. Whatever you need, share it, and then listen for Him to speak. Whatever you hear Him say, write it down. When He speaks, it’s always important.
