Why Is Fruit So Important?

You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. This is my command: Love each other. John 15:16-17 NIV

When we follow the disciples of Jesus, the very people who were confused, scared, impulsive, often divisive, subject to moods of the circumstances, envious all the way through the cross, we understand that though they were good men, they had many attitudes, issues, and mindsets that were deeply imbedded characteristics. In fact, the very night before He went to trial and then was crucified is when Jesus shared with them about the fruit and the Vine. That very night many of these characteristics were in full display. But later, throughout the Book of Acts and the New Testament, we see them become courageous, heroic, and consistent in character. Not because they went to a seminary or trained in emotional IQ or people skills – it was because they remained in Christ, and the fruit of the Spirit grew. This fruit enabled God’s great purpose.

Spiritual fruit is the evidence of the Holy Spirit’s transformative presence in our lives. His Spirit is not verified by signs and wonders, but by fruit. It is absolutely vital to our lives because …

It is evidence of our connection to Christ. Fruit serves as a growth marker of a believer's connection to God. It indicates they are led by God’s Spirit, not the desires and emotions of their own natural instincts. It is the natural result of being in daily relationship with Him, shifting from internal selfish desires to looking and living more and more like Jesus.

Fruit reflects Jesus to the world. Jesus said He is the exact representation of the Father. The primary goal of bearing fruit is to exhibit the character of Jesus, showcasing His love and nature through our actions and drawing people to God.

Fruit is an “inside-out” transformation. Unlike the law, which Paul points out repeatedly is unable to change us as it dictates behavior externally, the fruit of the Spirit represents an internal change that results in external good works. It is not up to our discipline and effort. It is the result of remaining.

Fruit is a means of serving others. As I grow and become more and more like Jesus, these fruits bless others and promote unity within the church, embodying goodness and love in my daily interactions and choices.

  • Jesus, remaining in You and growing the fruit of the Spirit is the only way to consistently be my best self, bless the world, and represent You well. Help me today to remain and flourish.
