The First Great Awakening

1734-1743

In the early 1700s, church attendance had dropped significantly, and many were indifferent to faith. George Whitfield, a dramatic preacher from England, arrived in America and began holding open-air meetings that attracted thousands. His bold, energetic style drew huge crowds, and church attendance soared from 14% to 55%. Whitfield’s methods broke tradition, focusing on God as a merciful, personal figure, not a punishing one. This revival demonstrated the power of innovative approaches to reaching the masses and reignited faith.

Cane Ridge & The Second Great Awakening

1801 & 1824-1840

By the 1800s, church attendance had fallen again, with only 6% of Americans attending. At Cane Ridge in Kentucky, the Spirit moved unexpectedly, with people shaking and falling under its power. The revival attracted 20,000 people and sparked the Second Great Awakening. Preacher Charles Finney spread this fervor to urban areas, leading to a wave of conversions and social reforms, including the abolition of slavery. Awakenings often impact both spiritual and societal change.

The Businessmen’s Revival

1857-1858

Jeremiah Lanphier, a businessman in New York City, felt a deep burden for the people around him during a time of economic crisis. He began hosting weekly lunch-hour prayer meetings, and though it started small, it quickly grew. Soon, the meetings spread nationwide, with an estimated 1 million people attending, bringing spiritual renewal across the country. Lanphier’s radical obedience sparked revival, showing that even small acts of faith can lead to transformation, reminding us that one person’s obedience can spark a movement.

Azusa Street Revival

1906

William Seymour, an African-American pastor, began prayer meetings in Los Angeles despite rejection from local churches. The meetings grew, moving to a dilapidated building on Azusa Street. Thousands gathered, experiencing supernatural encounters like healings and speaking in tongues. The revival, known for its racial inclusivity and powerful encounters with God, eventually sparked a global Pentecostal movement. Azusa Street proved that awakenings are born from prayer and often come with personal sacrifice.

Students and the Jesus Movement

1948-1970

During the Vietnam War, young people turned to faith, seeking answers to life’s uncertainties. New ministries like YoungLife and Campus Crusade for Christ targeted teens and college students, while Billy Graham filled stadiums with his evangelistic crusades. The Jesus Movement, fueled by youth and countercultural energy, became one of the most influential revivals of the 20th century. This movement showed that spiritual awakenings often emerge through unconventional means, especially when led by younger generations.
