Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest decay and death from that sinful nature. But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit. Galatians 6:8 NLT
The story in Luke16 of the rich man is often called the story of the rich fool. He was an absolute success by worldly standards, but when he faced eternity, he was totally bankrupt. He badly miscalculated his time and resources, and poured 100% of his resources, time, and attention into a life lasting only a few decades, leaving his soul completely destitute for the reality that lasts forever.
The rich man was an expert at short-term investing. He had the expertise to obtain the best clothing, the most upscale housing, and entertained with the most talked about feasts and parties. Every choice he made was for himself, his own desires, and his own benefit. He spent all his energy on maximizing his own comfort and convenience. He spent everything he had on today and completely neglected tomorrow. He never paused to think about what would happen
The rich man is the ultimate illustration of sowing to the flesh and reaping destruction. The account tells us that he built high gates around his property, making certain he didn’t have to deal with broken and needy people. He lived for immediate gratification. This rich man made absolutely certain he didn’t experience any earthly discomfort, but completely ignored eternal consequences.
Think about it. The moment his heart stopped, everything changed. His bank account was worthless. Someone else owned his house and everything in it. He discovered too late that “you can’t take it with you” really is true, and you can’t change anything after death. Between the two after-life destinations there is a “great gulf fixed.” His earthly status and worth were short-term investments that had no value now.
The rich man wasn't a criminal. He wasn’t a wicked, evil abuser. He was a fool. He was too invested in his "here and now" desires and possessions to even think about forever. He prepared for everything except his appointment with death and eternity. Could anything ever be more foolish?
- The only time to prepare for tomorrow is today. The only place to prepare for eternity is earth. Make the investments today that will make you grateful tomorrow. Make the investments that please the Spirit of God and harvest true life.
