Today’s Scripture: Mark 2:13-17
Imagine Levi, also known as Matthew, sitting at his tax booth. He had money, a job, and influence, but he was likely isolated from his own people. Tax collectors were viewed as traitors, outsiders, and sinners. Most religious leaders would have avoided someone like Levi completely.
But Jesus did something different.
He walked right up to Levi and said, “Follow me.”
Jesus did not begin with a lecture about Levi’s past. He did not demand that Levi clean himself up first. He did not tell him to prove he was worthy. Jesus extended an invitation.
That is the surprising grace of God.
We often assume we need to change before Jesus will accept us. But the gospel shows us something better: Jesus accepts us by grace, and His grace begins to change us from the inside out.
Levi’s story reminds us that no one is too far gone, too broken, too overlooked, or too disqualified for the invitation of Jesus. He calls people others may have written off. He welcomes those who know they need mercy.
Maybe shame has convinced you that your past defines you. Maybe you have wondered if God could really use someone like you. Levi’s story says yes. Jesus sees you fully, loves you completely, and still says, “Come, follow me.”
PERSONAL REFLECTION
What label have you accepted about yourself that Jesus never gave you? Spend a few minutes today thanking Him for inviting imperfect people to follow Him.
PRAYER
Jesus, thank You for inviting imperfect people to follow You. Thank You that I do not have to clean myself up before I come to You. Help me release the labels I have carried and trust that Your grace both accepts me and changes me.
