Today’s Scripture: Matthew 20:25-28
Everyone wants a life that matters. The question is how we define greatness.
The world often measures greatness by power, influence, wealth, achievement, or recognition. We celebrate people who rise to the top, gain authority, and attract attention.
Jesus offered a completely different definition.
When His disciples argued about who would be the greatest, Jesus gathered them together and explained that greatness in God’s Kingdom looks nothing like greatness in the world.
“Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.”
What a remarkable statement. Jesus did not condemn ambition. He redirected it. He taught that true significance is found not in being served but in serving others.
This teaching challenges our natural instincts. We often want appreciation, recognition, and influence. Yet Jesus reminds us that the path to Kingdom greatness runs through humility. The greatest example is Jesus Himself.
The King of kings did not come demanding service from others. He came to serve. He gave His time, His energy, His compassion, and ultimately His life.
Followers of Jesus are called to adopt the same mindset.
Greatness is not measured by how many people serve you. Greatness is measured by how many people you serve. When we embrace Jesus’ definition of greatness, our priorities begin to change.
We stop asking, “How can I get ahead?” and begin asking, “How can I help others flourish?”
PERSONAL REFLECTION
Who can you intentionally serve today? Ask God to help you see opportunities to put someone else’s needs before your own.
PRAYER
Jesus, You redefined greatness not by being served but by serving. You came as the King of kings, yet You gave Your time, compassion, and very life for others. Redirect my ambition toward Your Kingdom. Free me from asking how I can get ahead, and help me ask instead how I can help others flourish. Lead me down the path of humble service.
