Who Is Your Master?

Who Is Your Master?

October 20, 2026

Today’s Scripture: Matthew 6:24

Jesus made a statement that remains just as challenging today as it was when He first spoke it: “You cannot serve both God and money.”

Notice that Jesus did not say we cannot possess money. He said we cannot serve it. The issue is not wealth. The issue is worship.

Money can become a powerful competitor for our devotion because it promises many of the things we are supposed to find in God. It promises security, significance, comfort, freedom, and control. Yet money is a poor master.

No matter how much we accumulate, it always demands more. It cannot provide lasting peace. It cannot guarantee the future. It cannot satisfy the deepest needs of the human heart.

Jesus understood that whatever captures our trust eventually captures our lives. This is why generosity is such an important spiritual discipline. Every act of generosity reminds us that God is our Provider. It loosens money’s grip on our hearts and strengthens our dependence on Him.

Following Jesus requires an honest evaluation.

Who is really leading your decisions?

Who receives your trust?

Who has your heart?

The answer to those questions often reveals who or what we truly serve. Jesus is not interested in being one priority among many. He desires first place in every area of our lives.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

Take a few minutes to evaluate your priorities. What do your spending habits, schedule, and attention reveal about what matters most to you?

PRAYER

Lord, You said I cannot serve both You and money. Search my heart and reveal where my trust and devotion truly rest. Loosen money’s grip on me through generosity, and remind me that You alone are my Provider. Take first place in every area of my life; let nothing compete for the throne that belongs to You.
